Indian Railways is advancing its semi-high-speed travel capabilities by approving the production of two new trainsets designed to reach speeds of 220 km/h. This initiative follows the success of the Vande Bharat Express, which currently holds the title of India's fastest train at 180 km/h. The new trainsets, each comprising 16 coaches, are being manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, with a total project cost of ₹866.87 crore (approximately $104 million USD). The trains will feature modern amenities such as steel-bodied coaches, fully air-conditioned Chair Car configurations, and reclining seats to enhance passenger comfort. This development is part of a broader push to modernize Indian Railways and improve rail connectivity, as most trains currently operate at speeds up to 160 km/h due to infrastructure limitations. With these new trainsets, Indian Railways aims to align with global semi-high-speed standards and offer a more efficient travel experience.
