The Bhubaneswar Metro project, initiated by the previous Biju Janata Dal (BJD) government in Odisha, has been scrapped by the current Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) administration. The government cited operating losses and feasibility challenges as the main reasons for this decision, which includes regularizing ₹273.51 crore already spent and terminating the agreement with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. The project, which aimed to cover a 26-km route from Bhubaneswar Airport to Trisulia near the Orissa High Court in Cuttack, was seen as a significant infrastructure development. However, with an estimated total cost of ₹6,300 crore, concerns over financial burdens and political implications led to its cancellation. Opposition parties have criticized the move as a betrayal of public interest, especially in light of the Union cabinet's approval of a ₹13,000 crore metro project in Jaipur, Rajasthan. BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi has called for the project to be reconsidered, arguing that metro systems are not expected to be immediately profitable. Urban development minister Krushna Chandra Mohapatra has indicated that the project is not entirely scrapped but rather on hold while a comprehensive mobility plan for Bhubaneswar is developed.
