On April 8, 2024, the FBI disclosed that the Russian hacking group Fancy Bear, associated with the GRU, has conducted a widespread campaign to steal sensitive information from military and government organizations by hacking into poorly protected Wi-Fi routers. This operation, discovered by intelligence and police services in countries including the United States, Canada, Ukraine, Germany, Italy, Poland, Slovenia, and Romania, has allowed hackers to access passwords, authentication tokens, and emails, which are typically safeguarded by SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) and TLS (Transport Layer Security) protocols. The Ukrainian security service, SBU, noted that the hackers acted as 'intermediaries' in the online space, gathering sensitive data to facilitate cyberattacks, information sabotage, and intelligence collection. Romanian President Nicușor Dan emphasized that Russia continues its hybrid warfare against Western nations, highlighting the seriousness of the threat. In response, the FBI has urged network defenders and owners of small office/home office routers to implement security measures such as updating firmware, changing default credentials, and disabling remote management interfaces to mitigate risks.
