Justice Yashwant Varma has submitted his resignation from the Allahabad High Court, effective immediately, citing deep anguish over the circumstances surrounding his departure. His resignation follows the discovery of burnt currency notes at his official residence in March 2025, which led to an inquiry by a three-member committee from the Supreme Court. The committee found that Justice Varma exercised 'secret or active control' over the cash, prompting Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna to recommend impeachment proceedings. In July 2025, notices for his impeachment were filed in Parliament, supported by 145 Lok Sabha members and 63 Rajya Sabha members. Following this, a committee was formed under the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968, to investigate the charges against him. Justice Varma has raised concerns regarding the constitutionality of the inquiry panel, arguing that proper consultation was required before its establishment. His resignation letter was addressed to President Droupadi Murmu and also sent to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant.
