As West Bengal prepares for its upcoming Assembly elections, the Election Commission's data indicates that 15% of the state's 294 constituencies have experienced voter deletions during the adjudication process that exceed the winning margins from the 2021 elections. Specifically, 44 constituencies have seen more voters deleted than the margins by which candidates won in the previous polls, with the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) winning 24 seats and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning 20 seats in these areas. Significant deletions have occurred in districts such as Purba Bardhaman, Paschim Bardhaman, and Nadia. For instance, in Samserganj, 74,775 voters were deleted despite the TMC winning by 26,111 votes in 2021. Overall, 27.16 lakh electors have been found ineligible to vote due to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, which was unique to Bengal and involved stricter eligibility criteria. The Supreme Court is overseeing this process, and its decision on related petitions is awaited, raising questions about the electoral integrity in West Bengal as the polls approach.
