A group of five medical students from the University of Miami participated in a virtual reality (VR) project that utilized Rocco Marconi’s 1525 painting, “Christ and the Adulteress,” to enhance their communication skills. This initiative, known as VITaLs, aims to address communication failures in healthcare, which are linked to approximately 440,000 preventable deaths each year in the United States. Dr. Gauri Agarwal, an internal-medicine physician at the university, emphasized the importance of understanding diverse perspectives in medicine, stating that art can challenge one's cognitive worldview. This is the first time the university has implemented visual arts training through a VR platform, developed in partnership with MediaCombo. The project brings together students from medical, nursing, and physical therapy programs to engage in discussions about art, guided by former museum educator Hope Torrents. Participants complete surveys to evaluate their learning and communication skills before and after the sessions. Torrents highlighted the significance of effective communication in healthcare, drawing from her personal experience with her husband's cancer diagnosis. The team plans to expand this innovative approach to additional universities, aiming to improve healthcare education and patient outcomes.
