Delhi's irrigation and flood control (I&FC) department reported to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that desilting of 77 drains will be completed by May 31, 2026. However, as of April 1, only 30.4% of the drains have been desilted. The NGT, led by chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava, has directed the I&FC to provide further progress reports, with the next hearing scheduled for May 21. This ongoing project is crucial as delays in desilting can lead to severe waterlogging during monsoon rains, which typically begin around June 27. In 2023, heavy rains caused extensive flooding, resulting in 50 rain-related deaths. The Najafgarh drain, which contributes to 69% of wastewater reaching the Yamuna River, is among the critical drains being addressed. The I&FC aims to remove a total of 2,857,464 metric tonnes of silt from these drains by the deadline.
