Noel Tata, Chairman of Tata Trusts, recently asked CEO Siddharth Sharma to approach trustees Venu Srinivasan and Vijay Singh regarding their positions in the Bai Hirabai Jamsetji Tata Navsari Charitable Institution (BHJTNCI). This request stems from concerns about the legitimacy of non-Zoroastrian trustees, as both Srinivasan and Singh do not meet the criteria outlined in the Trust Deed. Following the request, Venu Srinivasan, Chairman Emeritus of TVS Motor, opted to resign, while Vijay Singh chose to remain in his position. The issue gained traction after former trustee Mehli Mistry formally challenged their appointments before the Maharashtra Charity Commissioner, citing their non-Zoroastrian status. Legal opinions, including one from former Chief Justice HJ Kania, suggest that there are no legal barriers preventing non-Zoroastrians from serving as trustees, advocating for a more inclusive interpretation of the Trust's governance. This situation highlights the ongoing debate within the Tata Trusts regarding the eligibility of its trustees and the implications of these appointments.
