In April, international airfares from India have seen a dramatic rise, with routes like Mumbai to Kuala Lumpur increasing by 110% and New Delhi to Ho Chi Minh by 58% month-on-month. This surge is attributed to recent revisions in aviation turbine fuel prices and ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which have created uncertainty among travelers. Kapil Jain, cofounder of Fly Divine Travels, noted an increase in cancellations for destinations such as Vietnam and Azerbaijan, as travelers reconsider their plans due to soaring ticket prices. For instance, a ticket that costs ₹30,000 may now reach ₹45,000-50,000, prompting many to cut back on travel. Sunil Kumar, president of the Travel Agents Association of India, emphasized that the conflict's uncertainty is likely to dampen summer demand, particularly for European destinations. The Federation of Associations in Indian Tourism & Hospitality estimates a 15-20% decline in summer travel demand as high fares persist. Although airlines are currently operating with over 90% occupancy on domestic routes, the sustainability of these fare increases remains uncertain, with Air India recently raising fuel surcharges.
