They first met in 2012 through mutual friends while both were in other relationships. Aayush, who comes from a politically connected family in Himachal Pradesh, India, initially kept his relationship with Arpita under wraps. Their bond grew stronger after both experienced breakups. When Aayush first met Salman, he feared the worst but was pleasantly surprised by Salman's calm demeanor. Salman encouraged Aayush to pursue acting, stating, 'You can become an actor,' which motivated him significantly. He candidly shared his struggles, revealing he earned only ₹20,000–₹30,000 (approximately $240–$360 USD) a month at the time. Salman humorously asked Arpita, 'Kahan se leke aayi hai tu isko?' about Aayush's appearance.
