The Shimla municipal corporation has approved a ₹10 crore proposal for a tunnel designed to alleviate traffic congestion from Lakkar Bazaar to Indira Gandhi Medical College. Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh announced this initiative during a media briefing following the annual general meeting of the SEHB Society, the city's sanitation body. This project aims to ease traffic pressure on the circular road, with work set to begin after finalizing consultancy. In addition to the tunnel project, the meeting addressed the welfare of sanitation workers, including merging 350 outsourced workers into the SEHB Society and providing them with benefits linked to dearness allowance (DA). Compensation for accidental deaths will be ₹2 lakh, and health and life insurance coverage will be provided up to ₹30 lakh. Furthermore, the Diwali bonus for sanitation workers has been raised from ₹1,500 to ₹2,000, and they will receive seven extra days of paid leave. The government has also sanctioned ₹150 crore under the Urban Challenge Fund for various redevelopment projects in Shimla, including a public-private partnership for the Sabzi Mandi area.
