The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated a crackdown on unauthorized overhead telecommunication cables, citing safety concerns for citizens. Srinath Bhimale, chairperson of the standing committee, highlighted that there are about 3,600 km of unauthorized cables throughout the city. The PMC's budget included provisions for action against these cables, particularly guy-ropes that support overhead structures. Bhimale stated that while revenue generation is a goal, the primary focus is on public safety, as there have been incidents of cables falling and causing accidents. The PMC has engaged a private agency to identify these cables, and once identified, they will be cut. Bhimale has urged the PMC to start this action in his electoral ward on Pune-Satara road, and he has written to the police and PMC administration for strict enforcement. Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram has also called for a comprehensive policy to regulate overhead cables, addressing both safety hazards and the aesthetic impact on the city’s skyline.
