A cyclonic storm swept through Cachar district in Assam on Sunday afternoon, causing extensive damage, particularly in Silchar town. The storm, which included strong winds, hail, and heavy rainfall, began around 1 pm and lasted for about an hour. The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) reported that most damage occurred in Silchar, Katigorah, and Udharbond, with Malugram, Tarapur, and the DC Office enclave being the worst-hit areas. Uprooted trees blocked roads and damaged infrastructure, prompting immediate deployment of rescue teams. Field officer Ranabijoy Das emphasized that controlling the situation was a priority, as many buildings were affected by fallen trees. Residents reported prolonged power outages and shared visuals of the destruction on social media. Earlier that day, a 4.3-magnitude earthquake had struck the region at 9:21 am, causing panic but no major structural damage. Rajya Sabha MP Kanad Purkayastha expressed concern over the damage reports and confirmed that relief operations were underway. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted additional rainfall in the region.
