A rope tornado was sighted in West Liberty, located in Muscatine County, Iowa, as tornado warnings were issued for much of the state, along with parts of Missouri and Illinois. Residents in Iowa City, Johnson County, were alerted by sirens, prompting the National Weather Service (NWS) to advise them to seek shelter. The tornado was reported to be moving towards Iowa City, resulting in alerts for much of Johnson County. Videos of the tornado and the sirens were shared on social media platforms by storm chasers and local residents. Earlier in the day, a tornado warning was also issued for areas near Keota, Richmond, Wellman, Kalona, and parts of Iowa City, which expired around 4:45 PM CDT. Meanwhile, a separate warning affected areas like Promise City and Millerton, approximately 65 miles south of Des Moines. As the evening approached, much of southern and eastern Iowa remained under a tornado watch.
