Amitabh Bachchan, a legendary Bollywood actor, is featured in a new video promoting road safety as part of a campaign by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). In the video, he emphasizes the importance of using turn indicators and being aware of surroundings while driving. He advises drivers to avoid cutting off other vehicles and to check rear-view mirrors before making turns. This initiative is part of the government's ongoing efforts to raise awareness about road safety through campaigns like the Sadak Surakhsa Abhiyan, which aims to decrease road accident fatalities. Nitin Gadkari, the Minister of Road Transport and Highways, highlighted the alarming statistics of road deaths in India, with around 500,000 fatalities attributed to not wearing helmets and 30,000 due to not using seat belts, predominantly affecting individuals aged 18-44. The government has also introduced the 'Rah Veer' scheme, providing ₹25,000 (approximately $300 USD) to Good Samaritans who assist accident victims, while covering up to ₹150,000 (approximately $1,800 USD) for medical expenses. These efforts have reportedly led to a nearly 50% reduction in fatalities in certain districts, showcasing the potential impact of increased awareness and enforcement.
