The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a directive to all medical colleges, institutions, and universities in India regarding the charging of MBBS fees. According to the notice, institutions are permitted to collect fees only for the 4.5 years (or 54 months) of academic study, explicitly excluding the one-year compulsory rotating medical internship (CRMI). This decision follows numerous complaints about institutions charging fees for the entire duration of the MBBS program, including the internship, which does not involve formal teaching. The NMC has stressed that charging fees beyond the academic period is inconsistent with educational practices and leads to financial burdens on students without corresponding instruction. The commission has instructed institutions to ensure their fee structures are reasonable, transparent, and aligned with the officially prescribed duration of the course. Failure to comply with these guidelines will result in serious repercussions for the offending institutions.
