Tamil Nadu, often viewed as a model of social justice due to the influence of the Dravidian movement, still grapples with the significance of caste in its electoral politics. Recent studies indicate that the two major political parties, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), have increasingly nominated candidates from specific caste groups. Notably, approximately 45% of candidates from the DMK-led coalition and 55% from the AIADMK-led front belong to three dominant communities: Vanniyakula Kshatriya (Vanniyar), Mukkulathor (Thevars), and Kongu Vellalar (Gounders). This marks a rise from 38% and 47% respectively in the previous election cycle. The findings underscore the persistent influence of caste in shaping political strategies and candidate selection in Tamil Nadu.
