The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, indicating a rise in temperatures and humidity levels between April 15 and 16. Daytime temperatures are projected to exceed 35°C, slightly above the seasonal average. On April 13, the Santacruz weather station recorded a high of 35°C, while the Colaba observatory noted 33.7°C. Residents are experiencing discomfort due to high humidity, with the heat index exceeding 38°C in some areas. The alert extends to the broader Konkan region, including districts like Palghar, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg, where temperatures may also rise. Meteorologists attribute the temperature increase to an anticyclonic circulation bringing dry northerly winds, which limit cloud cover and enhance solar radiation. Despite the discomfort, no official heatwave alert has been issued, as temperatures have not consistently exceeded normal levels by the required margin. Historically, April is known for heat spikes in Mumbai, with the highest recorded temperature reaching 42.2°C on April 14, 1952.
