The Syndicate of the University of Madras (UoM) has approved the disaffiliation of Dr. MGR-Janaki College of Arts and Science for Women, located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. This decision allows the college to transition to Vel’s Institute of Science, Technology, and Advanced Studies (VISTAS) Deemed University, starting from the academic year 2026-27. Current students will continue to pay fees and take examinations under the UoM during the transition, ensuring their certificates are issued by the university. The college, established in 1996, has grown from 70 students to 4,000 students and 150 faculty members across 20 courses. The disaffiliation process was initiated following an application from the college management and a subsequent inspection by a University Inspection Commission. This move aligns with a broader trend of progressive closures of affiliated colleges, although disaffiliation proposals are rare.
