The Allahabad High Court has taken a strong stance against honeytrap extortion gangs operating in Uttar Pradesh. In a ruling on March 30, the court directed the state police to thoroughly investigate these gangs, which allegedly use women to trap men into extorting money. The case arose from a complaint in Bijnor, where a man reported being blackmailed after a sexual encounter with a woman, who allegedly recorded the incident and demanded ₹8-10 lakh (approximately $9,600-$12,000 USD) for silence. The court deemed the matter serious and ordered the inspector general of police for the Meerut zone to ensure district police chiefs remain alert to such criminal activities. The court refused to quash the extortion case against five individuals, including some policemen, and emphasized that allowing such offenses to continue would undermine societal decency. The petitioners later withdrew their plea following the court's directives.
