Unseasonal light to moderate rain in Haryana has disrupted wheat harvesting, causing delays in procurement at grain markets. Farmers are advised to refrain from harvesting until fields dry, as moisture levels in wheat exceed the permissible limit of 12%. Happy Singh, a farmer from Karnal’s Indri sub-division, noted that heavy rain on Wednesday rendered fields unfit for harvesters. Despite these challenges, the procurement process at the new grain market in Karnal is reportedly running smoothly, with minimal queues for gate passes. However, farmers like Anil Sharma from Kalron village experienced issues with biometric verification. Criticism has been directed at the government by former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of imposing unnecessary bureaucratic conditions that hinder procurement and deprive farmers of the Minimum Support Price (MSP). He highlighted that the previous Congress regime had a more efficient procurement process. The Deputy Commissioner, Uttam Singh, stated that additional staff have been deployed to ensure smooth operations at the mandis.
