Kamya Bhardwaj, a second-year BSc (Hons) Zoology student at Dyal Singh College in Delhi, has set a new record for the non-stop round-trip swim across the Palk Strait, which separates Tamil Nadu, India from Sri Lanka. Completing the 54 km journey in 18 hours and 15 minutes, she surpassed the previous record of 19 hours and 20 minutes held by swimmer Sujitha Dev Varman. Kamya's journey began on April 12 at 1:30 PM from Arichalmunai, India, and she faced significant challenges, including strong currents and jellyfish stings. Despite these obstacles, including an attack by a marine creature during the night swim, she persevered and returned to Arichalmunai by 7:45 AM on April 13. Kamya's determination is rooted in her childhood desire to grow taller through swimming, a goal that evolved into a remarkable athletic achievement. Now back at college, she looks forward to future challenges while managing her academic responsibilities.
