The pre-Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in Pune district, Maharashtra, is approximately 36% complete, according to Deputy District Election Officer Minal Kalaskar. The mapping aims to verify current voters against a 2002 voter list, with expectations to achieve 60-70% completion soon. This process involves Block Level Officers (BLOs) ensuring that names on the current list match those from 2002. Young voters whose names are absent from the older list must demonstrate that their parents were registered then. The SIR has been controversial, particularly in West Bengal, where 89 lakh voters have been removed, leading to legal challenges. Political parties in Maharashtra, including the Congress, argue for a more extended timeline for the SIR, emphasizing that there are no imminent elections in the state. Congress state chief Harshwardhan Sapkal stated that allowing one-and-a-half to two years for the process would alleviate public concerns about its integrity.
