The global race in artificial intelligence (AI) is encountering a major obstacle in the United States due to a severe shortage of electrical infrastructure, causing delays and cancellations in nearly half of the planned data center projects for 2026. Despite tech giants' commitments of over $650 billion in capital expenditures, the lead times for essential components like high-power transformers have extended from two years to nearly five years. This shortage is exacerbated by competition for resources from other sectors, such as electric vehicles. As a result, many firms are pivoting towards regions with more flexible grids, with India emerging as a prime destination. The Indian market offers significantly lower construction costs, estimated at $6 million to $7 million per megawatt, and has seen an expansion of nearly 3.5 GW of capacity planned across cities like Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Chennai. The Indian government is further incentivizing foreign cloud providers with long-term tax holidays, positioning the country as a global back-end for AI infrastructure. While India faces its own challenges, its ability to quickly commission new capacity makes it a pivotal player in the evolving AI landscape.
