The Indian government has approved a special economic zone (SEZ) for Tata Semiconductor Manufacturing Private Ltd to establish the first semiconductor fabrication plant in Dholera, Gujarat. This project, with a planned investment of ₹91,000 crore (approximately $11 billion USD), aims to bolster India's domestic chip manufacturing and reduce reliance on imports. The facility will cover 66.16 hectares and is projected to create nearly 21,000 jobs. The approval follows amendments to SEZ rules in June 2025, which lowered the minimum land requirement for semiconductor projects from 50 hectares to 10 hectares. In addition to Tata's initiative, the government has also approved four other semiconductor and electronics component SEZ proposals, including investments from Micron Semiconductor Technology India Ltd, Kaynes Semicon Ltd, and CG Semi Ltd. These efforts come as countries globally seek to secure their chip supply chains amid increasing demand driven by advancements in artificial intelligence, data centers, and consumer electronics. The Indian government is actively promoting the country as a viable semiconductor manufacturing hub through various incentives and regulatory support.
