The National Medical Commission (NMC) has introduced draft amendments aimed at simplifying the licensing process for Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) doctors. Under the proposed regulations, titled “Registration of Medical Practitioners and Licence to Practice Medicine (Amendment) Regulations, 2026,” AFMS doctors will only need to register with one State Medical Council, allowing them to practise across all states and Union Territories in India. This change addresses the challenges faced by AFMS personnel, who often undergo frequent transfers, making multiple registrations cumbersome and administratively burdensome. The draft also stipulates that after retirement, doctors will need to re-register or transfer their licence to the state where they plan to continue their practice. The NMC has opened the draft for public consultation, inviting feedback until May 7. Disciplinary actions for misconduct will be managed by the State Medical Council where the doctor is registered, with other councils providing assistance as necessary.
