A writ petition has been filed in the Jharkhand High Court seeking ₹1 crore compensation for each of five children who were allegedly infected with HIV due to contaminated blood transfusions at the Chaibasa Sadar Hospital blood bank in West Singhbhum district. The children, aged between five and seven, suffer from Thalassemia Major and belong to Scheduled Tribe and OBC communities, living in poverty as daily wage laborers. The petition demands lifelong free medical treatment, including safe blood transfusions and Anti-Retroviral Therapy, as well as pucca housing for their families. The state government had previously announced a ₹2 lakh compensation for each family, but the petition argues this is grossly inadequate given the severe social stigma and financial hardships they face. One child allegedly contracted HIV due to intentional malpractice by a hospital staff member. The case underscores the need for accountability and justice for the affected families, as the High Court has already ordered a detailed investigation into the matter.
