Hungary's political landscape has dramatically shifted with the defeat of Viktor Orban and his Fidesz party, ending a 16-year rule. Peter Magyar, a former insider who held various roles within Orban's administration, emerged as a central challenger after publicly breaking away from the party in 2024 following a scandal involving corruption. His Tisza party secured more than 52% of the vote, winning 138 seats in Hungary's 199-seat Parliament, surpassing the 133-seat threshold for a two-thirds majority. Magyar's campaign capitalized on widespread public dissatisfaction with corruption, as Hungary ranked as the most corrupt country in the European Union in 2025. Additionally, economic pressures exacerbated by inflation and stagnation following Russia's invasion of Ukraine played a significant role in his success. Magyar's strategy included focusing on rural areas and unifying fragmented opposition parties, which historically benefited Orban. He has vowed to dismantle Orban's institutional legacy and strengthen Hungary's ties with the European Union, including rejoining the European Public Prosecutor’s Office to investigate financial crimes linked to the previous administration.
