In response to extreme cold weather in late January and early February 2026, Duke Energy, based in Charlotte, North Carolina, experienced record electricity demand, necessitating the purchase of additional power from neighboring utilities. On January 27, demand peaked at 37,308 megawatt-hours, the highest recorded in the Carolinas. To ensure reliability during such conditions, Duke Energy is requesting recovery of approximately $809 million in fuel and power costs, which will result in a rate increase for residential customers starting June 1. Typical customers of Duke Energy Carolinas will see an increase of about $6.90 per month, while those with Duke Energy Progress will see an increase of about $7.88. Looking ahead, the company plans to invest in 19,600 megawatts of new generation capacity over the next decade to meet growing demand and minimize reliance on purchased power. Duke Energy also provides resources to assist customers in managing their energy bills, including energy efficiency programs and financial assistance.
