Bengaluru, often referred to as the 'beer capital of India', is facing potential challenges in its beer supply chain due to a combination of global tensions, rising input costs, and an early onset of summer demand. Industry experts, including Narayan Manepally, CEO of Geist Brewing Co, emphasize that disruptions in West Asia have affected trade routes, leading to increased logistics costs and shortages in essential packaging materials like aluminium cans and glass. The Brewers Association of India (BAI) has noted that rising gas prices have particularly impacted microbreweries reliant on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Furthermore, five tax hikes between July 2023 and May 2025 have pushed the retail price of strong beer from approximately ₹160 to ₹200 for 650 ml bottles, significantly affecting sales. While some breweries, such as Lokesh Hospitality, report limited impact on supply, they are adjusting operations to manage the situation. The industry is now awaiting clarity on revised excise rates and maximum retail prices to stabilize the market. Overall, while immediate supply issues are not widespread, the brewing ecosystem in Bengaluru is under pressure from multiple fronts, necessitating strategic adjustments from local breweries.
