Debabrata Saikia (Leader of Opposition in Assam) has raised alarms about security lapses in strongrooms storing post-poll election materials following the April 9 election, which saw a voter turnout of 85.96% among 2.51 crore voters. In a letter to Anurag Goel, Assam's Chief Electoral Officer, Saikia highlighted significant breaches of Election Commission norms, particularly in Nazira constituency, where he is contesting. He pointed out that only one door of the strongroom at Sibsagar Government HS & MP School was secured with a padlock, while others were inadequately protected, with many merely shut or fastened with simple latches. Saikia also noted the absence of a dedicated security presence near the storage area, raising concerns about the potential tampering of sensitive election materials. He urged authorities to conduct an urgent inquiry, ensure compliance with guidelines, and take action against responsible officials.
