Kumar Chunder (KC) Sen, a legendary impresario, played a crucial role in Kolkata's cultural landscape from the 1940s through the 1960s. During World War II, he led musicians to recording studios in the city amidst Japanese air raids, using music as a means to boost morale and support the war effort. His recordings, such as The Good Ship Victory, were pressed into 78 rpm discs to raise funds for the East India War Fund. In 1953, Sen founded Band Wagon, a talent agency that revolutionized Kolkata's western music scene by organizing weekly auditions and annual showcases like the Easter Parade and Christmas Revue. He transformed local venues into professional stages, launching the careers of artists such as Marie Sampson and Shirley Churcher. Additionally, Sen facilitated connections between different art forms, famously introducing filmmaker Satyajit Ray to cabaret star Vicky Redwood, who starred in Ray's film Mahanagar (1963). After retiring to the UK, Sen passed away in 2007, leaving behind a legacy that made Kolkata a premier destination for jazz and western pop music.
