Shashi Tharoor (Congress leader representing Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala) recently highlighted the significance of Vizhinjam Port amid the ongoing crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, where tensions between the United States and Iran have disrupted shipping routes. With around 100 ships currently queued at the port, Tharoor proclaimed it as a vital maritime hub for global shipping, stating, "100 ships. One destination." He noted that Vizhinjam Port is India's first deepwater transshipment port, which has successfully handled its 1 millionth TEU and is expanding to accommodate larger vessels. The port, developed at a cost of ₹8,900 crore (approximately $1.07 billion USD), is operated by the Adani Group, with the Kerala government holding a majority stake. Tharoor reminisced about the initial skepticism surrounding the project, asserting that it has now become a "global necessity" as the world seeks reliable shipping solutions. He concluded with pride in the port's achievements and its potential to set new standards in maritime logistics.
