Research indicates that hay fever cases have tripled in the last 20 years, leading to increased instances of eye conditions such as conjunctivitis, styes, and blepharitis. Pollution is making pollen more potent, causing symptoms to appear earlier and last longer. Dr. Aslam advises that air pollutants, particularly from traffic and manufacturing, can bind to pollen, lowering the threshold for allergic reactions. To mitigate these effects, she recommends practical steps such as wearing wraparound sunglasses, avoiding eye rubbing, treating symptoms early with antiseptic eye drops, and keeping windows closed during peak pollen times. Additionally, those who wear contact lenses may benefit from switching to glasses on high pollen days to reduce irritation.
