Nico Bers and James Zhang, both juniors at Northwestern University in Illinois, have been awarded the 2026 Barry Goldwater Scholarship, a prestigious honor for students pursuing careers in the natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering. This year, 454 scholars were selected from over 5,000 applicants nationwide, highlighting the scholarship's competitive nature. Bers, who has conducted research with the Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astrophysics (CIERA), plans to pursue a Ph.D. in astrophysics and aims to advance the study of high-energy astrophysical phenomena. He expressed that the scholarship is meaningful as it recognizes his undergraduate research and inspires him to continue in graduate school. Zhang, majoring in data science and mathematics, has worked with Professor Adilson Motter in the Center for Network Dynamics. He intends to complete a senior thesis and pursue a Ph.D. in statistics, focusing on the scientific applications of machine learning. Both students are grateful for the recognition and the opportunities it presents for their future academic careers.
