On April 18, 2023, Bannerghatta Biological Park in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India, welcomed four cheetahs, including two females, from Induna Primate and Parrot Park in South Africa. This transfer is part of an approved animal exchange program under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, aimed at enhancing conservation efforts and genetic diversity within captive populations. Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre oversaw the arrival at Kempegowda International Airport, emphasizing the importance of public awareness about the cheetahs, which were locally known as 'Sivangi' before disappearing from Karnataka's forests. The cheetahs will undergo strict quarantine protocols and health monitoring for 30 days to ensure their smooth acclimatization. Following health inspections in South Africa and the acquisition of necessary No Objection Certificates, the animals will be placed in a designated quarantine facility upon arrival. This initiative underscores the park's commitment to international collaboration in wildlife conservation and environmental education.
