On Thursday, the Supreme Court of India dismissed a contempt plea against the central government, which alleged non-compliance with the court's 2018 ruling on asset disclosure by election candidates. The bench, comprising Justices JB Pardiwala and KV Viswanathan, concluded that there was no willful disobedience of the earlier judgment. Justice Pardiwala noted that the implementation of the directions depends on their nature. The 2018 ruling mandated that candidates disclose their assets and sources of income, including those of their spouses and dependants, stating that failure to do so could be considered a corrupt practice leading to disqualification. The contempt plea, filed last year, argued that the government had not properly implemented the judgment. During the proceedings, the general secretary of the Lokpal proposed an amended plea for a permanent mechanism to monitor legislators whose assets increase by 100% between elections, suggesting that such cases could be referred to the Lokpal for further action.
