The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) is set to implement SRY gene tests and DNA testing for athletes at the upcoming Federation Cup in Ranchi, scheduled for next month. This marks the first major national championship where these tests will be conducted, aimed at ensuring that only biological females compete in the women’s category. The SRY tests, which are essential for compliance with World Athletics guidelines, will be administered to athletes in a centralized location to streamline the process. The AFI has negotiated the cost of the SRY test down to ₹3500 from ₹8000. Furthermore, the AFI will begin DNA testing to collect data that can enhance training methods and prevent injuries, as current data on Indian athletes is lacking. The findings will remain confidential, with results destroyed after being uploaded to the World Athletics website. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to improve the performance and safety of athletes while addressing issues of impersonation in the sport.
