Purnendu Tiwari, a former Indian Navy official, is unable to return to India after being detained in Qatar for nearly five months. In 2023, a Qatari court commuted his death sentence, along with seven other Navy personnel arrested on espionage charges in 2022. However, Tiwari faces separate allegations of financial irregularities linked to his previous employer, which the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that Tiwari's current legal situation is distinct from the earlier espionage case. His sister, Meetu Bhargava, expressed concerns over Tiwari's deteriorating health, citing his struggle with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other serious medical conditions. She criticized the Indian government for not securing his return and highlighted the troubling nature of the new charges, which she claims are unjust and arise from a case for which he had already received a pardon from the Qatari Amir.
