The billionaire owners of Bournemouth, Black Knight Football Club, are reportedly close to finalizing a takeover of Exeter Chiefs, a rugby club based in Exeter, England. An extraordinary general meeting (EGM) is scheduled for May, where Exeter members will vote on the proposed deal. Black Knight Football Club, which acquired Bournemouth in late 2022, also holds stakes in Hibernian and FC Lorient, as well as owning Auckland FC. This potential acquisition reflects a growing trend of significant investments in English sports, following notable purchases such as Red Bull's acquisition of Newcastle United and James Dyson's 50% stake in Bath Rugby. Exeter Chiefs chairman Tony Rowe has expressed the necessity for fresh investment, stating, “What I'm looking forward to is an investor who's got some money. That'll be a massive difference for me.” He highlighted the financial challenges faced by the club, emphasizing that professional sports require substantial funding for sustainability and success.
