During the 22nd biennial state-level conference of judicial officers in Karnataka, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant urged the judiciary to embrace artificial intelligence (AI) with caution, emphasizing its potential to enhance efficiency in legal processes. He stated that technology should serve as an aid rather than a substitute for human judgment, highlighting the importance of maintaining constitutional values in judicial decision-making. CJI Kant expressed concerns over AI-generated inaccuracies, including fabricated legal precedents and misleading claims, which could undermine the judicial process. He stressed the necessity for judicial officers to critically examine AI outputs and ensure their accuracy, as the responsibility for justice cannot be delegated to machines. The Chief Justice called for a balance between technological advancement and the preservation of the judiciary's fundamental identity, advocating for continuous learning and self-reflection within the judicial system. He concluded that while tools may evolve, the core mission of delivering fair and humane justice remains unchanged.
