The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a temporary suspension of the smart meter rollout until a technical committee submits its report. This decision follows widespread opposition and consumer complaints regarding the prepaid smart meter system. Energy Minister A K Sharma stated that existing smart meter users will continue to receive power for up to three days or until their dues reach ₹200 for loads up to 2 KW, even if their prepaid balance is depleted. A four-member technical committee, including experts from IIT Kanpur and UP Power Corporation, will assess the smart meters' quality and performance, with findings expected in 10 days. To ease the transition, the government has introduced a 45-day grace period where no disconnections will occur, allowing consumers time to adapt. Additionally, a five-stage SMS alert system will notify users about their balance status, and a consumer awareness campaign has been launched to address concerns. The power department has also improved grievance redressal services to ensure prompt resolution of issues.
