Mudassar Ali Siddiqui, an operation theatre technician, surrendered to the ACJM-6 court in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India, on Thursday, becoming the 11th person arrested in a kidney trafficking racket. Siddiqui is accused of conducting over 30 illegal kidney transplants and played a crucial role in the surgical procedures. He had been evading police since the racket was exposed in March 2023 following a complaint from Ayush Kumar, a 23-year-old student from Bihar, who alleged he sold his kidney for ₹6 lakh (approximately $7,200 USD). This kidney was then transplanted into a recipient for around ₹80 lakh (approximately $96,000 USD). Siddiqui's name emerged during the investigation, leading to a ₹25,000 (approximately $300 USD) reward for information about his whereabouts. He was remanded to 14 days of judicial custody after his surrender. The investigation has already led to the arrest of several medical professionals, including Dr. Preeti Ahuja and her husband, Dr. Surjit Ahuja, with ongoing efforts to apprehend other suspects.
