The Congress party, led by Priyanka Gandhi, has announced its opposition to the government's proposed delimitation and women's reservation bills in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have assured southern states that they will not lose political representation if delimitation occurs. However, Congress leaders argue that linking women's reservation to delimitation is a strategic move to manipulate electoral constituencies for political gain. The Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, which aims to extend women's reservation and facilitate delimitation, was introduced in the Lok Sabha, where 251 members voted in favor against 185 opposed. Although a simple majority allowed the bill's introduction, it requires a special majority for passage, which the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) currently lacks. With 240 seats, the BJP is the largest party, but the NDA coalition's total of 293 is insufficient to reach the necessary benchmark of 360 votes in the Lok Sabha. In the Rajya Sabha, the NDA's strength is approximately 145, falling short of the 164 votes required for a two-thirds majority, indicating a challenging path ahead for the government.
