Sukhbir Singh Badal, the chief of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), has condemned the Indian government's proposed population-based delimitation of parliamentary constituencies, asserting it is discriminatory towards Punjab. He highlighted that while Haryana is set to nearly double its Lok Sabha representation, Punjab will see only a nominal increase. Badal contended that this approach penalizes Punjab for effectively implementing population control measures and rewards states that have not adhered to these goals. He expressed concern that the plan disproportionately strengthens four Hindi-heartland states—Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Rajasthan—potentially allowing them to control over 40% of Lok Sabha seats. This shift, he warned, could severely undermine the federal structure of India. The SAD plans to lead an all-party initiative in Punjab to oppose this delimitation exercise, despite its support for the Women's Reservation Bill, which aims to increase women's representation in Parliament. The delimitation is intended to facilitate the implementation of the Women's Reservation Act before the 2029 elections, increasing the total number of Lok Sabha seats to 850 from the current 543.
