JSW Steel Ltd has officially entered into a 50:50 joint venture with South Korea's POSCO Group to develop a 6 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) integrated steel plant in Keonjhar district, Odisha. This venture is a significant milestone, marking POSCO's return to Odisha nearly two decades after its previous project was abandoned. The joint venture, under the name Saffron Resources Pvt Ltd, will utilize 887 acres of land, with an investment of approximately ₹35,000 crore (around $4.2 billion USD), aimed at creating 8,000 jobs. The project has received high-level clearance from the Odisha government and is expected to be completed by December 31, 2026. The partnership combines JSW Steel's extensive production capabilities with POSCO's advanced technology, potentially exploring low-carbon steelmaking processes and premium products. This initiative is poised to enhance Odisha's position as a steel manufacturing hub in India, leveraging the region's abundant iron ore resources and improving local industrial growth.
