A second-year student was found dead at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Kurukshetra, Haryana, marking the fourth suspected suicide on campus in less than two months. This incident has sparked protests among students who are demanding a comprehensive investigation and better mental health support. The deceased, a 20-year-old from Buxar district in Bihar, was discovered in her hostel room on April 17. Following this tragedy, students criticized the administration for its delayed response and lack of effective support systems. Previous incidents included the suicides of three other students, raising alarms about the mental health environment at the institute. In response, NIT officials stated they are reviewing mental health initiatives and enhancing student interactions with faculty. A review committee from the Union ministry of education is set to visit the campus to evaluate the situation. Experts emphasize the need for proactive mental health measures, as many students hesitate to seek help due to stigma.
