Ontario universities are experiencing a historic surge in applications, with 168,919 individuals applying for undergraduate programs this fall, according to the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC). This figure represents the highest number recorded in 50 years. A significant factor in this increase is the rise in applications from 'all other applicants,' which includes mature, transfer, and out-of-province students, totaling 66,037 and marking a 12.4% increase from last year. This shift is partly attributed to a rebound in interest from international students, following a period of decline linked to federal policy changes regarding study permits. Steve Orsini, president and CEO of the Council of Ontario Universities, noted that previous federal cuts discouraged international applicants, but recent investments in global recruitment have begun to reverse this trend. While the overall number of Ontario high school applicants also rose by 2.3% to 102,882, the increase in 'all other applicants' is particularly encouraging for the sector. Algoma University reported the largest growth in this category, with a 25.7% increase. However, challenges remain, as colleges have faced significant drops in international student enrollment, leading to program cancellations and layoffs. The long-term impact of these trends on the province's post-secondary education landscape remains to be seen.
