As the election approaches, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) are ramping up efforts to secure the votes of fishermen in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. With approximately 1.5 lakh votes available across seven coastal constituencies, both parties are aware of the significance of this demographic. Community leaders from fishing villages, particularly in Ennore and Tiruvottiyur, are expressing frustration with the DMK's decision not to nominate candidates from their community, which could jeopardize the party's previous stronghold in these areas. The AIADMK has strategically nominated K Kuppan, a member of the fishermen community, to contest in Tiruvottiyur, capitalizing on DMK's perceived missteps. Voter concerns also include environmental issues, such as pollution in Buckingham Canal and inadequate infrastructure at the new Tuna harbour, which have been exacerbated by the incumbent MLA's inaction. As dissatisfaction grows among fishermen regarding representation and support, both parties are keen to address these issues to secure votes in the upcoming elections.
