During a community event in Colombo, Vice President CP Radhakrishnan announced a historic policy change extending the eligibility for Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards to the 5th and 6th generations of the Indian-origin Tamil community in Sri Lanka. This shift addresses a long-standing request from the diaspora, reinforcing India's commitment to its historical ties with Sri Lankans of Indian descent. The application process for OCI cards has been simplified, allowing documents issued by Sri Lankan authorities to be used. Additionally, the Vice President handed over the final cluster of 4,000 housing units under the Indian Housing Project Phase-III, transitioning families from inadequate housing to dignified living spaces. As part of the $450 million Indian Assistance Package, train services on the Northern Railway line have resumed, and three additional Bailey bridges will be installed to reconnect communities affected by Cyclone Ditwah. Furthermore, discussions with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya led to a doubling of scholarships under the Ceylon Estate Workers Education Trust Scholarship Scheme, enhancing educational opportunities for Sri Lankan students.
